Women’s Hair Loss

Causes of Women’s Hair Loss

Hair Loss in Women Isn’t the Same as It Is for Men

Hair thinning and shedding can be deeply emotional experiences for women, but unlike men, most women aren’t genetically predisposed to lose their hair. Instead, female hair loss is often a symptom of a deeper issue: hormonal changes, medical conditions, stress, or underlying scalp health problems.

At Lake Norman Hair Loss Solutions, we know that female hair loss isn’t just about looks; it’s about identity, confidence, and feeling like yourself again. That’s why our personalized approach begins with understanding what’s behind your hair loss before offering non-surgical, real-world solutions tailored to your stage of loss, lifestyle, and goals.

HOW HAIR GROWS AND WHY IT STOPS

The Hair Growth Cycle: Understanding the Disruption

Hair loss happens when something interferes with your natural growth cycle. That’s why a proper scalp and follicle assessment is so important, so we can uncover the true cause of your hair loss and identify the best way to address it.

Hair Grows and Sheds in 4 Stages

Hair loss starts when the natural rhythm of your hair growth gets thrown off.

Phase 1: Anagen (Growing Phase)

The active growth phase, which can last up to 7 years. Most of your hair (80–90%) should be in this stage at any given time.

Phase 2: Catagen (Transition Phase)

A short, two-to-three-week window when growth stops and the follicle detaches from its blood supply. Only about 3% of hair should be in this stage.

Phase 3: Telogen (Resting Phase)

Hair rests before shedding and re-entering the growth cycle. Typically, up to 100 hairs are shed daily in this stage, but disruptions can lead to excessive loss.

When more hair than usual shifts prematurely into the resting phase, often due to stress, hormonal imbalance, or illness, diffuse thinning or patchy loss can occur.

Phase 4: Exogen (Shedding Phase)

In this final active shedding phase of the growth cycle, the resting “club” hairs detach from the follicle and can last anywhere from 2 to 5 months.

Common Causes Of Female Hair Loss

What’s Behind Your Thinning Hair

Unlike men, whose hair loss is typically related to male pattern baldness, women experience hair loss for a broader range of reasons, many of which are temporary, preventable, or reversible with the right approach.

Some of the most common causes include:

  • Telogen Effluvium (excessive shedding triggered by stress, illness, surgery, or childbirth)
  • Hormonal Imbalances (including menopause, PCOS, or thyroid dysfunction)
  • Alopecia Areata (autoimmune condition causing patchy bald spots)
  • Traction Alopecia (caused by tight hairstyles over time)
  • Trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling)
  • Nutritional Deficiencies (such as iron, zinc, or biotin deficiencies)
  • Scalp Conditions (e.g., seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis)
  • Prescription Medications
  • Genetic Predisposition (female pattern hair loss, though less common)
  • Chronic or Acute Stress
  • Medical Treatments (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation)
